Working at Outside is a fun and challenging experience. Prior experience is not necessary. Candidates are required to successfully complete our 5-day Outside Guide Training Course or Retail and Reservation Training or other training where appropriate. Guide Training coursework includes kayaking skills, safety skills, basics of interpretive naturalism, ecology, history and environmental awareness. We also cover public relations and leadership skills. This is comprehensive training for the full range of our programs – kayak, boat, and land-based tours. All new staff, with very few exceptions, are required to successfully complete this program. The 5-day Guide Training Course costs $275. Successful completion of this course is required to become an Outside guide or Captain. It is an intense, comprehensive training that can lead to further certifications. $175 of the cost will be reimbursed provided that you remain employed with Outside through August 7, 2025. The balance covers books, training materials and uniform.
*Note: for interns, the entire cost of Guide Training is non-refundable.
